Neonatal Jaundice Awareness Month

Newborn jaundice is the most common condition requiring medical attention in newborn infants. About 80 per cent of Pre-term and 50 per cent of term infants develop jaundice in the first week of life.

Newborn jaundice occurs when the colour of the skin and eyes of the newborn baby begins to look yellow in the first 28days of life.

The Paediatric Society of Ghana is creating an Awareness in the Month of May to save babies with Jaundice, therefore terming β€œMay is Yellow Month’’ the month of the Awareness of Newborn Jaundice.

The condition is also caused by prematurity, infections and, blood group differences between mother and baby. Camphor use in babies with the condition of the blood known as G6PD deficiency and poor feeding.

There are some things one needs to look out for in their babies after delivery
1. Check for abnormal yellow colouring of the baby’s eyes by exposing baby to bright light at least twice daily.
2. Check if the baby’s stool colour is pale with little or no colour.
3. Poor feeding, abnormal cry, high body temperature and reduced physical activity

If detected early, newborn Jaundice can be treated. Take the baby to the hospital if you see the yellowish discolouration on your baby’s skin and eyes. Newborn Jaundice will result in difficulty in hearing loss, visual impairment, problems with walking and movement, learning, feeding and can also result in death, if not treated early.

It is important pregnant women register early for antenatal care and avoid contact with the faeces of cats and dogs. Families should avoid storing babies clothing with camphor and babies should be born in a certified health facility.

The misconception of expressing milk into the baby’s eyes, exposing the baby to sunlight, giving glucose drinks to your baby to treat jaundice is dangerous and may not work.

Remember, ”Early detection and early treatment will save your baby’s life -Stand up and let’s fight.’’

Archbishop AgyinAsare describes Nogokpo as the Demonic headquarters of the Volta Region.

The Perez Chapel founder described the Nogokpo township as the “demonic headquarters” of the Volta Region following a near-tragic incident

TheΒ NogokpoΒ shrine in the Ketu South municipality of theΒ Volta RegionΒ has advised the founder of Perez Chapel International,Β Archbishop Charles Agyinasare, to desist from making any derogatory remarks about the deity.

Delivering a sermon in church to recall an experience after a crusade in Aflao recently, Agyinasare described Nogokpo as the β€œdemonic headquarters” of the region after a near-tragic incident in the town.

Archbishop Charles Agyinasare

β€œDuring this crusade in Aflao, we slept at Agbozume and you had to go through Nogokpo, and it’s the demonic headquarters in the Volta Region, we only have not said it,” Agyinasare said.

β€œBut the second night, I made Bishop Yaw Adu talk about witchcraft, and we disgraced the witches and wizard, when we were driving from Aflao to Agbozume, immediately we got to Nogokpo, Bishop Adu’s tyre came out of his four wheel drive (car),” Agyinasare said

Reacting to the claim, the shrine alleged that some pastors of Perez Chapel International draw their powers for β€œchurch business” from the town.

β€œDear Archbishop Charles Agyinasare our religion does not accept lies, fake prophecies, defrauding people under false pretense, extorting monies from people in the name of taking them to β€œheaven” which does not exist, taking taxpayers and innocent citizens money to build worthy homes, burry things or make sacrifices to get more members, we do not lose our focus to be preaching other religions rather than focusing on our ethics.

β€œWe will rather advice you to focus on making your members understand your religion rather than attacking others. He who beats the war drum must be ready to dance accordingly. The same demonic headquarters are the places your pastors come to more members and powers to do your β€œchurch businesses”.”

β€œIf you don’t have a topic to preach about then we will advice you close your church and come for proper education on our religion first. The last time we check, there’s freedom of religion and worship. For us, we will never say ill things about someone’s religion and see ourselves as holy. Your bible even says DO NOT JUDGE.,” it posted on Facebook on Thursday 25 May 2023.

Nymphomania

The excessive and stronger sexual desire of a female or a woman. A nymphomaniac is a female who has strong sexual feelings abnormally, a mental disorder marked by compulsive sexual behavior. Compulsions are unwanted actions or rituals, that a person engages in repeatedly without being pleasure from them or being able to control them. Nymphomania can happen to any adult, though it is thought that it may be more common in women and homosexual men. The underlying cause of nymphomania is not known. Nymphomania is a mental and emotional condition, and, like such conditions, are complicated. Like other mental illnesses nymphomania is a rest of environment, hereby, and life even. It may also be linked to a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Symptoms Of Nymphomania You may experience nymphomania symptoms daily or just once in a while. At times any of these nymphomania symptoms can be severe:

  • Difficulty in concentrating
  • Feelings of shame or inadequacy
  • Guilt
  • Repeated, uncontrollable behaviors (compulsion)
  • Repeated, unwanted thoughts (obsession

Causes Of Nymphomania

However, research has shed some light on factors that may contribute to hypersexual behavior, including:

  • Stressful life events
  • Trauma, including sexual abuse
  • Imbalance in brain chemicals, calledΒ neurotransmitters
  • Environmental triggers
  • Neurological conditions and medications used to treat them, such asΒ Parkinson’s disease

Some research implicates traits such as poor judgment, impulsivity, and preoccupation with or engagement in excessive sexual fantasies, urges, or behaviors.

How is nymphomania treated?

There is no cure for nymphomania. Like many other mental illnesses, nymphomania may be treated with medication, psychotherapy, or a combination of the two. With treatment, it is possible to manage compulsive sexual behavior.

Treatments for nymphomania

In addition to following the treatment plan developed by your health care providers, you may be able to help self-manage your nymphomania by:

  • Eating a balanced and healthy diet
  • Engaging in social activities and other activities that you find enjoyable
  • Getting regular exercise and sleep
  • Participating in a support group
  • Seeking support from family and friends

Nymphomania is a condition that is often misunderstood and stigmatized. Seeking treatment takes courage and strength, and it is important to surround oneself with supportive friends and family who can provide encouragement and understanding. Avoiding triggers, practising mindfulness, developing healthy coping strategies, and building a support network are some self-help strategies that may help manage Nymphomania. Nymphomaniacs are not outcast, bad people , we need to help them out of that situation….

World Hypertension Day

TheΒ InternationalΒ HypertensionΒ League, which Β servesΒ asΒ theΒ umbrellaΒ bodyΒ forΒ 85 nationalΒ hypertensionΒ societiesΒ and leagues, Β hasΒ proclaimedΒ andΒ established theΒ dayΒ asΒ WorldΒ HypertensionΒ Day.Β The purpose of the day is to raise awareness about high blood pressure.

EveryΒ yearΒ onΒ MayΒ 17th, Β WorldΒ HypertensionΒ DayΒ is commemorated toΒ increase awareness andΒ encourageΒ hypertensionΒ prevention, detection andΒ managementΒ (deferredΒ toΒ OctoberΒ 17,Β 2020,Β dueΒ toΒ COVID-19Β pandemic).The primary risk factor for developing cardiovascular disease is high blood pressure. Hypertension, or high blood pressure affects more than a billion people worldwide and is a leafing cause of cardiovascular diseases and that mortality.

Two-thirdsΒ ofΒ instancesΒ ofΒ hypertension are foundΒ inΒ low-Β andΒ middle-incomeΒ nations, Β andΒ thisΒ isΒ partlyΒ becauseΒ riskΒ factorsΒ haveΒ risenΒ inΒ thoseΒ populationsΒ overΒ theΒ past few decades.Β However, almost half of those who have hypertension are unaware of it, which puts them at risk of available medical complications and death.

TheΒ GlobalΒ HeartsΒ InitiativeΒ wasΒ startedΒ inΒ 2016Β byΒ theΒ WHOΒ andΒ theΒ USΒ CentersΒ for DiseaseΒ ControlΒ andΒ PreventionΒ inΒ orderΒ toΒ reachΒ theΒ globalΒ goalΒ ofΒ reducingΒ the prevalenceΒ ofΒ hypertensionΒ byΒ 25%Β byΒ 2025.Β

TheΒ InitiativeΒ aimsΒ toΒ enhanceΒ heartΒ healthΒ globallyΒ throughΒ itsΒ fiveΒ technological packages,Β HEARTSΒ (manageΒ cardiovascularΒ illnesses),Β EMPOWERΒ (controlΒ tobacco), ActiveΒ (promoteΒ physicalΒ activity),Β SHAKEΒ (lowerΒ saltΒ consumption),Β andΒ REPLACE (removeΒ transΒ fat).Β The HEARTS technical package itself offers recommendations for identifying and managing persons with hypertension in primary care mare successfully.

In 2023, the theme is Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer, focusing on combatting low awareness rates worldwide, especially in low to middle income areas, and accurate blood pressure measurement methods. Some Resources include a free online course on accurate automated blood pressure measurement offered by PAHO, and guidelines for checking accuracy of BP monitors in 16 languages.

This important worldwide activity was created by the WHL and first held on May 14, 2005, with the theme: Know Your Numbers! WHD was a resounding success with 24 countries participating, and since then World Hypertension Day has been an ever expanding yearly event. It’s purpose is to communicate to the lay public the importance of hypertension and its serious medical complications, and to provide information on prevention, detection and treatment. To do this requires cooperation of health care professionals, media, volunteer organizations and government in each country.
