Poultry farmers lament over high cost of poultry feed for smooth productivity.
Poultry farmers in Akatsi,Weta and the surrounding communities in Akatsi South and Ketu North Municipalities of the Volta region, have lamented over the high cost of poultry feeds for smooth productivity. This according to them, has affected the poultry business as well as contributed to the low productivity in the areas.
Mr Dornoo Wonder, Manager of ‘Feed Nation Farms Limited,’ a poultry farm at Akatsi, in an interaction with Keta-based SandCity radio ,stated that the price of poultry feeds keep on increasing.
“Poultry farming is a lucrative business that many would like to indulge in but the cost incentive and others with its challenges tend to drive many away,” he stated.
He further debunked the report from the Poultry Farmers Association of Ghana (PFAG), that stated that the reduction in prices of maize has led to reduction in price of poultry feeds, fowls and eggs.

He said the high cost of poultry feeds was attributed to importation and high cost of ingredients in preparing the feeds.
“I have about 20,000 birds which l prepared the feeds for locally to reduce the high cost involved though it is costly considering the price of the various ingredients.”
He said other ingredients for the feeds which include soya beans, oyster shell, maize, concentrates, wheat among others were of high cost that ranges between ₵200.00 and ₵500.00.

Western North: Over 137,000 SHS 1 students yet to report due to financial challenges.
The Conference of Heads of Assisted Secondary Schools (CHASS) in the Western North Region states that about 137,000 fresh senior high school students are yet to report to school despite gaining admission.
CHASS bemoans that although schools reopened for fresh SHS students on December 4, 2023, a little over half of the total candidates placed in schools in the Western North Region are yet to report to their respective schools due to financial challenges faced by their parents, most of whom are cocoa farmers.
Speaking to the media, the President of CHASS in the Western North Region, Nana Amo Amankwah, expressed concern about the situation.
“As we speak, in a number of the schools, those who have reported are just a little above half of the number placed, and that is our concern. The Western Regional Director of Education gave an update that about 137,000 students have not taken up their admissions yet. According to them, they are facing financial challenges.”
He urged the fresh students to ignore the requirements on the prospectus and report to school, as provisions have been made by the government for a smooth academic session.
“A good number of the schools have mattresses, so we just want them to come. They should not think about the items on the prospectus so long as they can get a towel and sponge; they should come. They don’t have to get everything on the prospectus before they come.”
Prospectus, other expenses incurred by parents outweigh govt spending.
A study conducted by Africa Education Watch, an educational civil society organization, has revealed that expenses on prospectuses and other items by parents outweigh the costs incurred by the government under the Free Senior High School program.
The education think tank stated that parents spent GH¢2,477 on prospectuses for their wards in boarding schools and an additional GH¢4,000 on other personal items, including 60% on provisions, 10% on transportation, 10% on books, 10% on upkeep and 10% on personal effects like toiletries, sanitary pad among others during the 2023/2023 academic year.
It’s a shame for an NDC Youth to join the NPP-Fifi Kwetey
General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, has stirred controversy with repeated attacks on Volta Youth joining New Patriotic Party (NPP) with remarks characterizing elections in Ghana as an “Ashanti-Ewe affair.”
During a tour of the Volta region with NDC flagbearer John Dramani Mahama, Kwetey urged people from the Volta Region to view every election in Ghana as a direct competition between Ashantis and Ewes.
Encouraging the people in the region to embrace the NDC as their political “religion,” Kwetey suggested that individuals should remain committed to their chosen political affiliation, regardless of its performance in government.
He emphasized that just as people in the Ashanti Region and, to some extent, the Eastern Region, support the NPP, there should be no stigma if those in the Volta Region support the NDC. In a divisive statement, Kwetey declared, “Ghana politics is Ashanti vs. Ewes, and that is why as a Voltarian, you must take NDC like your religion.
Whether good or bad, you must stand by it and defend the party with your life.”
He expressed concern about the decreasing support for the NDC in the Volta Region as a result of Volta Youth joining NPP, noting that some youth in the region were shifting allegiance to other political parties. He called it “shameful” and urged Voltarians to hold onto the political foundation that has shaped their culture.
This is not the first time Kwetey has made such ethnocentric comments.
In a previous instance, during a regional retreat for NDC executives in January 2023, he urged Voltarians to treat the party like a religion and worship it like “God.”
These remarks had already received widespread condemnation.
The comments have sparked criticism from various quarters, with the NPP Volta Regional Chairman, Makafui Woanya, rejecting the notion of blind allegiance to a political party. Woanya emphasized that the NPP would depend on its achievements in the region to win the support of the people.
The majority caucus in parliament also condemned Kwetey’s comments, with Frank Annoh-Dompreh, the Majority Chief Whip, expressing shock and disappointment. He urged against taking the country’s ethnic and religious tolerance for granted and called on Kwetey to retract his statement.
